20 Apr 22 Once again life events got in the way yesterday - but boy was it worth it - so my apology for the late mailing. Yesterday started off looking rather bleak and it began with the felling of four large cottonwood trees adjacent to our church. Got a few nice shots of the trees with the individual climbing in silhouette in some rather threatening weather. When I got back home I checked the weather in La Conner - the area where the tulips are grown, - and it looked like it might be O.K., so off we went. What a day it turned out to be. Deep blue skies, fantastic white puffy clouds, and one beautiful several acre field of red, yellow, and purple tulips. Haven't had a day up there like that in perhaps a decade!! All that coupled with a most memorable sunset which unfortunately I couldn't shoot as we were driving but we got to experience it. La Conner used to be field after field after field of tulips with lots of free parking and easy access to the flowers. Yesterday there were but three fields, virtually no parking for access, and very limited colors in the fields. One of the two commercial locations we visit had gone from a $7 entrance fee with military discount and re-entry ability the last time we visited it in 2019 to a flat $15 fee and no re-entry. We didn't bother to visit the second one. The $15 entry fee however did provide access to some LOVELY displays featuring approx 2 million hand planted bulbs; hard to even imagine the labor involved in that. All that aside, the combination of colors and the show in the heavens as the backdrop made for a magnificent day. We even got to see several rain squalls but always in the distance without a drop falling on us; you can see three of them in the image. Thought about removing the naked apes but them let them in for perspective. Stopped for dinner on the return trip at a nice burger place in the Tulalip Casino complex that features a $6 hot fudge sundae, large enough to be your complete meal!! Highly recommended!! The resort also features a water display with falls and full sized Orca; a treat in itself. For those of you near me, the next couple days might be perfect for visiting La Conner.
This is straight from the camera; I used a polarizing filter to get the deep blue. Close to Perfection Nikon D500; 18 - 200; Aperture Priority; ISO 200; 1/1,000 sec @ f /13.
